Foodies’ Norway: 10 Culinary Experiences  - by Marie Peyre

Photo: specialkrb

You may have never considered it, but Marie Peyre states a strong case for Norway being a world class destination for seekers of fine food.

Seen the fjords, tried the skiing, spotted a moose or two? Good. But after your outdoor ventures (and all that fresh air), you'll be hungry, so the next question is "What's cooking?"

Norway does not (yet) have a reputation as a foodies' destination, but it should, as there is plenty to discover beyond aquavit (the national tipple) and the much lauded smoked salmon. Think fantastic local ingredients such as king crab from the Barents Sea, organic Lofoten lamb or the simple cloudberry for example. Some of the finest restaurants in Scandinavia, with traditional dishes for all seasons. And talented, creative young chefs blending old Norwegian traditions with more modern, continental styles to produce unique dishes that have been winning over gourmets both at home and abroad. Some local dishes may test your resolve as well as your tastebuds (smalahove, half a head of sheep, has remained a delicacy foreign tourists rarely dare try), but the culinary curious will find plenty of unexpected, pleasant surprises awaiting everywhere.

Restaurant Bagatelle, Oslo

The best restaurant in Norway, and the only one to boast two Michelin stars. Chef Eyvind Hellstrøm has penned a number of books and appeared in various television programmes over the years, the latest being a Norwegian version of Kitchen Nightmares, where he took over the role played by Gordon Ramsay in the British series. Located in the upmarket district of Frogner in west Oslo, the restaurant offers delightful French-inspired cuisine featuring the best of Norwegian ingredients, with a strong emphasis on fish and game (in season). A stylish contemporary setting, a top cellar and professional service make this an experience you won’t forget. Such indulgence doesn’t come cheap, however – the tasting menu costs a whopping NKr1480 (approx £150), wine not included.

Really interesting, thank you. Don't tend to think of good food when you think of Norway (not sure Smalahove will change that either..!) but as your article shows, there's alot going on! Have a friend who is visiting Norway soon and will make sure they read this too.
